How to save $$ on online airfare bookings
One sure way to save money when you’re booking flights online for more than 2 people is to book the tickets in smaller batches. Airline reservation software saves fares in levels and since there aren’t many seats on sale at the lowest level, if you try to reserve a larger number it will bump you up to the next higher fare level.
Here’s how this works. If you want to book a flight for your family of five and you’re typing 5 passengers into the airline’s search engine, it may not offer you 5 tickets at the lowest price. As an example, let’s assume there are only 4 tickets left at the lowest price level of $500. Open 3 browser windows at the same time and reserve 2 seats in one window, 2 seats in another and the final one in a third. You will find that you’ll get the lowest fare of $500 for the first 4 tickets and the 5th will be offered a higher fare of $575. If you had tried to reserve all 5 flights at once, you would have only been offered the $575 fare. Using the individual booking method in this example, you save $300.

Most airlines, especially so called legacy carriers protect their business on the existing developed routes they fly. When a new carrier enters that market specific route, especially a discount carrier, the prices usually get very competitive right from the start and not just for a week or two, often for months.
